Are you looking to unwind, express your creativity, or learn a new skill rooted in rich cultural heritage? Join our Instruction to the Art of Sashiko workshop and immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of traditional Japanese embroidery! This workshop is for anyone seeking a creative outlet: You don't need prior experience in art or sewing to enjoy and benefit from Sashiko stitching.
What we will be creating in this workshop are 4 coasters, each coaster with a different traditional Sashiko stitch based on a grid. This is a small enough project that you can try out a few different types of Sashiko stitches. Yet you walk away with something completed and useful.
Sashiko, meaning "little stabs," is a centuries-old Japanese stitching technique originally used for reinforcing or repairing worn fabric. Today, it is celebrated for its elegant geometric patterns and minimalist designs that bring both beauty and functionality to textiles. Originally used to reinforce or repair clothing, Sashiko has evolved into an art form that is therapeutic, mindful, and deeply calming.
Mindful Creativity: The repetitive nature of Sashiko stitching encourages mindfulness, allowing participants to focus on the present moment and quiet their thoughts.
Express Yourself: Whether you're a seasoned artist or a complete beginner, Sashiko offers a creative outlet for self-expression. You can create beautiful patterns that reflect your inner world.
Cultural Connection: Learn about the rich history of Japanese textile art and the meaning behind Sashiko patterns, connecting with a tradition that has been passed down through generations.
- Learn the basics of Sashiko stitching, including traditional patterns, techniques, and how to use the tools. This workshop is low pressure, the focus is on creativity and will be taught by the talented Urooj Memon.
We will be providing the marking pen, fabric, needle, and thread needed for this project.
Please note: The colour of the linen used in class will be different than what is in the example photos.
